Walls to Bridges

Walls to Bridges is a youth project that uses collective mural creation as a tool for dialogue, inclusion and community building. Through street art and intercultural collaboration, young people transform public walls into messages of connection and shared identity.

Project concept

Walls to Bridges was developed as a response to social divisions, stereotypes and limited spaces for dialogue among young people. At the heart of the project is the creation of large-scale murals in public spaces, designed and painted collectively by young people from different cultural and social backgrounds.

How the project works

The mural creation process is not only an artistic activity, but a structured learning journey based on non-formal education. Participants work in mixed groups to explore themes such as identity, belonging, diversity and coexistence. Through facilitated discussions, creative workshops and collaborative design sessions, ideas are transformed into visual concepts that reflect shared values and lived experiences.

Young people are involved in all stages of the mural process, from concept development and storytelling to painting and public presentation. By working side by side on public walls, participants build trust, challenge prejudices and develop a strong sense of ownership over the final artworks.

The finished murals remain in the community as visible and lasting outcomes of the project. They turn walls into bridges, inviting passers-by to reflect, engage and start conversations inspired by the messages created by young people.

Impact and learning outcomes

In parallel, the project strengthens the capacity of youth workers by introducing art-based and participatory methods that can be transferred to other youth work contexts. Walls to Bridges demonstrates how mural art can function as a powerful tool for social inclusion, youth participation and community engagement.
